Action Alert-Missouri Senate Considers Resolution Opposing “Sanctuary Cities” for Abortion

From the Missouri Catholic Conference……

Let’s Stop the “Abortion Sanctuary” Movement NOW!

Urge Your State Senator to Support SCR 10

Senator Paul Wieland (R-Imperial) has filed a Senate Concurrent Resolution (SCR 10) that urges the City of St. Louis to shelve a proposed “abortion rights” ordinance. The proposed ordinance (Board Bill 203) would allow the City of St. Louis to fine religious institutions and people of faith who refuse to comply with its abortion mandates.

Passage of SCR 10, which requires the concurrence of the Missouri House of Representatives, will send a message not only to the City of St. Louis, but to any other Missouri municipality which seeks to become a “sanctuary” for the abortion industry.

The proposed ordinance, which is similar to ordinances passed in Boston and Washington, D.C., would allow fines to be levied on religious institutions, such as Catholic schools or Catholic Charities agencies, as well as people of faith who refuse to comply with the demands of the abortion industry.

If passed, the proposed ordinance would allow the City of St. Louis to levy fines of up to $500 and imprisonment of up to 90 days when employers, including religious employers, do not cover abortion in their insurance plans, decline to hire individuals who publicly advocate for abortion, or refuse to rent office space to the abortion industry.

St. Louis Archbishop Robert J. Carlson condemned the ordinance in a strong statement issued last week. The Archbishop declared that the proposed ordinance would attack “the most deeply held moral and religious convictions of the people of this great city.” The Archbishop said the ordinance would require people of faith to aid and abet the abortion industry. “As a shepherd of the faithful Catholics of this region, let me be clear that the Archdiocese of St. Louis cannot and will not comply with any ordinance like Board Bill 203 that attempts to force the Church and others to become unwilling participants in the abortion business,” he said.

SCR 10 should be supported not just by citizens in St. Louis, but citizens throughout the state of Missouri. If the City of St. Louis passes the “abortion sanctuary” ordinance, other Missouri municipalities will likely follow suit.

Let’s stop the “abortion sanctuary” movement in its tracks right now by passing SCR 10 and ensuring BB 203 is defeated! Let’s not give “sanctuary” to the abortion industry anywhere in Missouri.
