The movie Unplanned coming out on Blu-Ray, DVD, & Digital (Updated)!

The movie Unplanned coming out on Blu-Ray, DVD, & Digital is the subject of this Big B File.

The Movie Unplanned is slated to be released in most stores on August 13th while others are releasing the movie on August 15th. The movie is a powerful pro-life film depicting the true story of Abby Johnson, a former Planned Parenthood director turned national pro-life advocate and author. The movie also carries a message of hope, conversion, and redemption for anyone in need of God's grace and mercy.

As the official movie website states:

The film is the inspiring true story of one woman’s journey of transformation.

All Abby Johnson ever wanted to do was help women. As one of the youngest Planned Parenthood clinic directors in the nation, she was involved in upwards of 22,000 abortions and counseled countless women about their reproductive choices. Her passion surrounding a woman’s right to choose even led her to become a spokesperson for Planned Parenthood, fighting to enact legislation for the cause she so deeply believed in.

Until the day she saw something that changed everything, leading Abby Johnson to join her former enemies at 40 Days For Life, and become one of the most ardent pro-life speakers in America.

It should be noted the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA) gave the movie an R rating for “some disturbing/bloody images” and not for the  adult themes, adult activity, hard language, intense or persistent violence, sexually-oriented nudity, drug abuse or other elements that are typical in R rated movies. According to the Washington Times, Cary Solomon and Chuck Konzelman (co-writers and co-directors of the film) said in a letter to the MPAA “While the filmmakers were certain they were making a PG-13 film, the MPAA has informed them that it will, in fact, be rated R unless all scenes of abortions are removed or altered,”  Abby Johnson, who’s story that the film is based on, addressed this R Rating issue back in March 2019:

So why the R rating? For two scenes. Two scenes that the movie team was determined to re-create accurately, at my insistence, because they are important for people to see. The first is a CGI (Computer-Generated Imagery) recreation of what I saw on the ultrasound screen when I assisted in the abortion procedure that convinced me of the humanity of the unborn. You will see what I saw: a baby on an ultrasound screen in black and white 2D. You will see the abortion instrument, which looks like a big straw in real life and like a dark line on the ultrasound, introduced onto the screen. You will see the baby struggle against it. You will see the baby first slowly, then quickly disappear into the instrument as it does what it is designed to do. It is important for you to know that this was a CGI recreation and NOT footage from a real abortion. But it sure looks like what I saw. I think this scene is so important for teenagers and older children to see because it tells the truth about what our culture keeps trying to insist is a “right” and a “freedom.” No one will be able to see this scene and then say they “don’t know” the truth about abortion.

The second scene that was cited as a reason for the R rating is a scene that re-creates my awful experience with the abortion pill. Ashley, the actress who plays me, did a fantastic job capturing both my physical pain and my fear. I won’t lie to you; that scene shows some blood. In real life I hemorrhaged so badly I thought I was going to die. The movie captures that without being gratuitous or gory. I think the producers walked that line well.”

By the way . . . the movie can be pre-ordered online from all of the above retailers.  I don’t know where this was just a coincidence or not, but you have to believe that maybe the Blessed Virgin Mary and Divine Providence was looking favorably on the people behind the movie when the release dates were negotiated with the retailers for the movie to be first appearing on their shelves.

The reason I say this is that one of the two release dates, August 15th, just happens to be in the Catholic Church the Solemnity of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary . . . a date of huge significance. This is the day that the immaculate Mother of God, the ever Virgin Mary, having completed the course of her earthly life, was assumed body and soul to heavenly glory.

The Big B Files strongly recommends for anyone ages 13 and older to go and see the movie Unplanned at a theater near you.
